Simon Fisher-Becker has recently become the well known actor for fans of the show Doctor Who, playing the character Dorium Maldavar. Here he discusses how it was to be part of the Doctor Who cast and how Matt couldn’t stop talking off set! He also discusses the future for Dorium and how he felt attending the London Film & Comic Con.

How was it to be part of the well known show Doctor Who?
To be absolutely honest I’m genuinely chuffed to be part of Dr Who. The response from the fans has been superb. As a follower of Dr Who since the days of William Hartnell I keep pinching myself that not only am I getting to play a wonderful multi-layered character but the Fans Love Dorium…..!

Working with the cast on Doctor Who must have been exciting, have you got any funny stories about what happened on set whilst you weren’t filming?
Matt Smith Talks about Football a lot. I’m more of a Rugger chap so I nod and smile and try to think of a footballing term or phrase and it helps the conversation buzzing. We had a scene in the Control Room where we had to all fall around as bombs were thrown at Demons Run - a very Star Trek moment - huge fun but was not in the final cut….!

After we saw you in series 5, I know a lot of people were hoping that you’d come back to the show in the future, and ofcourse you did. How does it feel to be part of such an important storyline in the current series?
Naturally I hoped Dorium would return and when the call came for Ep7 I was bouncing around like Tigger for days. When the script came and I realised how much more Dorium was to do, there was a slight panic - but then I started bouncing around like Tigger again…!

Would you be interested in coming back to Doctor Who in the future?
Absolutely YES. I would love Dorium to return in future series - I know the Fans do but it is ultimately Steven Moffat’s decision to make.

Out of all the roles you played throughout your acting career which would you say has been the most interesting?
All roles are interesting - it is the job of the actor to find the extra fascination about a character and to get across the motivation of said character. Dorium is such a delight because the writing is so perfect. Is Dorium and Goodie or a Baddie, he can be menacing but also childish - oohh there’s so much to discover about Dorium…!

Did you enjoy attending the London Film & Comic Con? Was it how you expected it to be?
The conventions are a marvel - as you probably have guessed I’m a bit of a gas bag. I have broad spectrum of interests and happy to pontificate on any given subject for hours….. Meeting so many interesting people is a delight but I did not realise how tiring it could be. The London Film TV and Comic onvention was particularly special because I got to meet some of my heroes too - Walter Keonig, Peter Jurasik, Stephen Furst and managed to catch up with Alex Kingston..
